Ocean Portal Make a Splash and Find Your Blue
As the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico weighs heavily on our minds, use the National Museum of Natural History's new, award-winning Ocean Portal website to discover simple things you can do to help protect the ocean every day.   GRASS ROOTS: AFRICAN ORIGINS OF AN AMERICAN ART
 
Grass Roots
On view through November 28 at the National Museum of African Art, Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art traces the history of the coiled basket from farm tool to art object. This exhibition emphasizes the contributions of African people and culture to American life in the southeastern states. In addition to baskets, the exhibition's 200 objects include African sculptures and paintings accompanied by photography and videos.

  YVES KLEIN: WITH THE VOID, FULL POWERS 
 
Yves Klein
Come to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture garden now through September 12 to learn about one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Despite his premature death at 34, the works of this self-proclaimed "painter of space" represent a transition in modern art from concern for material objects to a more conceptual nature of art.  Be sure to download the museum’s Yves Klein iPhone app that features his works, biography, and more at the palm of your hand.

  2010 INDIAN SUMMER SHOWCASE
 
Indian Summer Showcase The National Museum of the American Indian joins the embassies of Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico and Peru to present multi-day cultural festivals throughout the summer to celebrate music, art, culture, dance, film and food of Native groups from these countries. Next up is the six-day Peruvian festival starting July 13 where you can join in dance lessons, watch indigenous artisans and enjoy films.

  Zoom Across the Electronic Superhighway
 
  Use our “Zoom It” tool to explore Nam Pak’s Electronic Superhighway: Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii. To design this monumental map of the United States, the artist Nam Paik arranged 336 televisions on a scaffold and overlaid it with almost 600 feet of neon. Fifty DVD players send multimedia simultaneously to screens populating each state. Each state displays its own unique cultural reference including the Empire State Building in New York, Abraham Lincoln in Illinois, and the Wizard of Oz in Kansas.
